Introduction
Yunnan Baiyao(云南白药) also known as Yunnan Paiyao, has been extensively used in Asia for many years and is considered a sort of miracle drug for wounds, pain, and hemorrhage. It is famous for being carried in their first aid kits by the Vietcong during the Vietnam War. It has been used by Chinese soldiers for hundreds of years. In China, its reputation is similar to that of Penicillin in the U.S.
It is useful for any type of open wound and any kind of surgery. It reduces recovery time for surgery by half because it mends injured blood vessels. It does not interfere with Western sedative drugs, so can be used the same day as surgery. By immediately activating blood circulation, it helps resolve bleeding, pain, and swelling. It heals oozing wounds and damaged blood vessels, while expelling pus and counteracting toxins.
Although the ingredients are still secret, the two main herbs are raw and steamed tienchi ginseng. The raw form is cooling, the steamed form is warming. It is the combination of the two forms, along with other herbs, that make Yunnan Baiyao a balanced and powerful "drug" for pain and injury.
Its primary application is acute traumatic bleeding, where the powder is applied directly to the cut. The product is antibacterial as well as homeostatic. It is taken internally to inhibit internal bleeding due to trauma, surgery or cerebral hemorrhage.
Unlike Western pain drugs, it does not turn off pain centers in the brain, but instead facilitates circulation, bringing oxygen to the injury. Cuts heal quickly with even a single application, and with a butterfly bandage it can help seal smaller wounds that might otherwise require stitches. In various clinical studies, it has shown to reduce clotting time by 33% to 55%.
It is also used for traumatic swelling or bruising, or for other blood disorders including thrombocytopenic purpura and leukemia.
TCM analysis: Stops bleeding, dispels blood stasis, disperses swelling, clears heat, resolves toxins, relieves pain.
Ingredient lists may vary. The exact formula is a closely guarded secret. The primary ingredient is Notoginseng.

About Hemangiosarcoma and Bleeding Tumors in Animals
Hemangiosarcoma is a very deadly cancer in dogs, mainly Goldens and German Shepherds, which generally isn't diagnosed until the dog collapses or dies. This sort of cancer is genetic, hereditary, and it runs in bloodlines. It causes a tumor in the heart (also seen in the spleen, and other organs) that leads to fluid build-up in the pericardium. Yunnan Baiyao has been used successfully to relieve the fluid build up and help with the dog's comfort level. Typical dosage: 2 capsules, twice a day, with food. TESTIMONIAL (Veterinary): "The Hope Center has found Yunnan Baiyao to be beneficial in both our oncology and emergency patients for many reasons. Patients with excessive bleeding caused by trauma, hemorrhagic pericardial effusion, bleeding skin tumors, and hemorrhagic abdominal effusion may benefit from this Chinese herbal supplement. Patients with single or multiple internal masses are prone to bleeding or can sometimes rupture causing a large amount of blood to build up in the abdomen.
The patients we expect to benefit the most from this product include: hemangiosarcoma, heart based tumors, liver tumors, mast cell tumors, any bleeding nasal tumor, and some types of melanomas. Unfortunately most tumors have the potential to bleed either due to their type and/or location. We have been using both the oral and topical form of the Yunnan Baiyao.
The red pills are used for acute bleeding or discovery of acute bleeding. We have recently started using the red pill on the day of surgery, such as stable splenectomies. If the red pill is used in acute emergencies, we will start the regular capsules 2-6 hours later. We dose our pets as follows: Cats and dogs <10 lbs 1EOD, dogs 11-20 lbs 1 every 24 hours, 21-89 lbs 1 every 12 hours, >90 lbs 2 every 12 hours.
With some cases as they progress in their disease, the tumors grow larger, or the bleeding/oozing is more frequent we may have the owners increase the frequency to every 6-8 hours. "

TESTIMONIAL (Dog Owner):
"Dear Suigetsu Shop,
It's with a very heavy heart, that we are letting you know that our very special Golden Retreiver, Saige, passed away this morning peacefully here at home with both of us by her side.
Saige was diagnosed with hemangiosarcomo October 24, 2009 by a highly regarded specialized vet hospital. There was a tumor on her heart that caused blood to collect between the heart and the pericardium. The blood was drawn off from the sack between her heart and the pericardium. Her life expectancy according to the vet at that time was 5 minutes to 3 months maximum. She was with us 4 months - and those 4 months were very good - normal activity, eating and all bodily functions performing perfectly normal. We are of firm belief that the capsules - Yunnan Baiyao - had a very positive affect on her condition. We're of strong conviction that Yunnan Baiyo's affect on controlling bleeding was a strong factor in her being with us as long as she was - especially with her being her happy - playful - loving self right up to early this morning.
Thank you so much for your excellent customer service - prompt shipments, care and concern - during this very trying time for us.
Regards,
Bruce and Diane Fowler"

In deep or wide wounds, squeeze cut together, pour powder on, and apply pressure or keep closed for 1 to 2 minutes, or until bleeding has stopped.
About the tiny red pill: The manufacturer recommends that one take the single red pill (bao xian zi) be taken in cases of serious wounds or bleeding. This is used to prevent shock from blood loss. It does not stop bleeding. Use only one red pill per day. Ingredients are unknown.
Notes: Avoid consuming cold foods, like fish, broad beans, citrus (sour) and dairy. Yunnan Baiyao has a warming quality while these foods have a cooling quality. Cold foods require strong digestion as well. Therefore to achieve the best results when taking Yunnan Baiyao, they should not be combined together.Other hot consumables, like alcohol, chicken and goat meat are indicated as promoting the healing effects. If taking Yunnan Baiyao makes you dizzy or upsets your stomach, take it with warm soup. Take with a sip of wine to treat chronic gastritis.

About the Manufacturer
Yunnan Baiyao is available from two major brands. The newer Yunnan Baiyao Group brand with blue packaging has exclusive marketing rights in the United States. The older Camellia Brand packaged in a yellow/red box and labeled Yunnan Paiyao is available through some importers. After years of good service, it is our recent experience that the quality of Camellia Brand is suspect and may be experiencing counterfeiting in the Chinese market. For that reason we discontinued sale of the Camellia Brand Yunnan Paiyao in the yellow/red box.
